3 Programs Earn Top Honors at IAAIS Conference

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Tempe, AZ, June 09, 2009

Three Sun Sounds of Arizona programs received top “Program of the Year” honors at the International Association of Audio Information Services (IAAIS) Conference in June 2009. The annual IAAIS awards recognize quality programming and technical achievement among more than 100 reading services world-wide. These award-winning shows, and the nearly 100 others on Sun Sounds, provide a vital link to current print information for the disability community. From news and entertainment to the weekly grocery ads and obituaries, the programs on Sun Sounds help thousands of Arizonans live more independent and self-productive lives.

“Receiving Program of the Year recognition underscores the quality and dedication that Sun Sounds volunteers bring to our station,” said Andrea Pasquale, Manager of Volunteer and Programming. “Without volunteers, many of whom have worked at Sun Sounds for more than 10 years, we simply couldn’t provide access to information for thousands of Arizonans who cannot use printed material.”

Program of the Year in the Entertainment (post-produced) category went to Love Letters, a production of the A.R. Gurney play produced by volunteer Joyce Totlis with audio engineer Margie Zebell, and talent Pamela Kellar, Bruce Novkov and Keith Tyler. This radio drama program aired on Sun Sounds on Valentine’s Day, 2008.

Program of the Year in the Information (pre-recorded, edited) category went to Community Calendar, a weekly program highlighting entertainment events, movie and restaurant reviews, special concerts, and happenings around the Valley, produced, engineered, and read aloud by Judy McDonough.

Poetry Readings Blended with Music, produced and engineered in Tucson by Douglas Martz and read aloud by talent Lisa Coleman and Shaw Kinsley, received Program of the Year honors in the Narrative Reading (post-produced) category.

The IAAIS received 86 entries in 17 categories ranging from pre-recorded entertainment and news to live, on-location productions. These 3 IAAIS awards bring Sun Sounds’ total to 30, especially apropos as Sun Sounds of Arizona celebrates its 30th Anniversary year.
